How much ramp should a Commander deck run?

The stock answer is 10–12, and for one particular kind of deck it's even right. But the number isn't a rule of the format — it follows from two things on your own list: what your commander costs, and what the rest of your curve looks like. This page shows what each ramp count actually buys, computed exactly, so you can pick yours on purpose.

Ramp buys turns, not mana

Start with what a ramp piece actually is: a card and some mana today, exchanged for one extra mana on every turn afterward. Cast an Arcane Signet on turn 2 and you are not richer — you are a card down and a turn behind, and you stay behind until the extra mana has bought something real: your commander a turn ahead of schedule, a five-drop and a two-drop in the same turn, a counterspell held up beside your threat. The transaction only profits if your deck has expensive things it wants to do sooner.

That is the entire reason the right count follows your curve. A deck of two- and three-drops has nothing to spend the acceleration on; a deck topping out at seven cannot function without it. Any answer that starts with a number instead of your curve has skipped the question.

What a ramp count is actually worth

Here is what different package sizes deliver in a 99-card deck on the play — exact hypergeometrics, the same math as this site's calculators:

Two honest readings. First, the consensus number does real work: moving from 8 pieces to 12 takes “a ramp piece by turn 4” from 59% to 74%, and lifts the games where a second piece arrives by turn 6 from a quarter to nearly half. The convention is not superstition.

Second — and this is the part the 10–12 articles never print — no count you would actually run makes ramp dependable. At ten pieces, a third of your games see no ramp at all through turn 4. To have a piece in hand by turn 2 in 90% of games you would need 24 pieces — a quarter of the deck. A ramp count buys how often you get the accelerated games; it can never be the thing your mana relies on. The reliable half of your mana is the land count, which is why that budget doesn't move much when this one does.

Your commander sets the deadline

Acceleration has a deadline, and your commander's cost is what sets it. A two-mana rock speeds up a commander that costs C only if the rock is on the battlefield by turn C−2 — any later and the commander was arriving on schedule anyway, and the rock is just mid-game value. The chance a piece shows up by its deadline:

Chance of having seen at least one piece by the deadline turn, on the play, assuming your land drops arrive to cast it — the rock's own mana cost is the sibling page's subject. Read the ends of this table, not the middle.

The cheap end stops early for a reason. A two-mana rock cannot be cast before turn 2, so it can never beat a two- or three-mana commander onto the battlefield. If your commander costs three or less, rocks are not acceleration for it at all — the only ramp that is comes at one mana, a Llanowar Elves on turn 1, and mostly the commander didn't need the help. These decks still want mid-game mana, but a smaller package covers it.

The expensive end needs more than the table shows. A 7-drop gives the same ten pieces more time to appear — 71% make the deadline — but one rock only turns a turn-7 commander into a turn-6 commander, and the deck still spends five turns doing very little. Coming down two turns early takes two pieces by turn 5: 30.7% of games at ten pieces, 48.3% at fourteen. And the fallback is far worse than the cheap deck's, because at 37 lands even the sixth land drop arrives on time in only 25.6% of games — the seventh is rarer still. A deck with a big commander doesn't want ramp; it requires it, in quantity, and as cheap as the card pool allows.

The middle row is the internet consensus, and the math above backs it — for that row. Ten to twelve is a correct answer to a specific question, “a four- or five-mana commander over a normal midrange curve,” and since most Commander decks are that deck, the answer hardened into a universal rule. The ends are where the flat number misleads: it sends the token deck with a three-mana commander shopping for Signets it cannot cash, and tells the deck built around an eight-mana dragon that twelve pieces is plenty when its own fallback math says otherwise.

Both inputs matter, not just the commander. A cheap commander sitting on top of a fat curve — reanimator shells, X-spell decks — ramps for the curve, not the commander: use the row your spells live in.

Not every mana producer is a piece

Two-mana rocks and two-mana land ramp count at full weight — cast on turn 2, they are on the battlefield before every deadline in the table above. Rampant Growth and Nature's Lore add what no rock has: the land they fetch survives artifact wipes and fixes a color forever.

Mana dorks count at full weight and are faster still — a turn-1 dork beats every deadline a rock can — but they are the first casualties of every board wipe and stray ping. That fragility is not in the arithmetic above, so treat it as a reason to hold the top of your range, not to recount.

Three-mana rocks count at half weight for acceleration. Cast on turn 3, one still puts a five-plus-mana commander down a turn early — but it eats the whole of turn 3 to do it and does nothing at all for a four-drop. They earn their slots on what else they do (fixing, card text), not on speed.

Rituals and treasures are not pieces. Every number on this page is about permanent mana that compounds each turn after it lands; a Jeska's Will is a loan — one burst, gone at end of turn. Storm and combo decks convert bursts into wins and should value them by that math, which is not this math. Count them at zero here.

Sol Ring is one card in 99: it is in your opening hand in 7.1% of games. When it appears it beats every number on this page; the other nine games in ten it does not exist. Count it as one piece and plan nothing around it.

Ramp and lands are one budget — but not one number

None of the counts above touch your land count. The standard 37-land baseline already assumes roughly ten ramp pieces, so a normal package has been paid for — cutting lands for it again is double-counting. If this page's math talks you into fourteen or fifteen pieces, the shave rule is about one land per three cheap pieces beyond ten, with a hard floor around 34. And every probability above quietly assumed the ramp gets cast: a Signet asks for two lands on turn 2, and the hands where lands fail are exactly the hands where ramp sits stranded. How much ramp should a Commander deck run?

It depends on the curve, and the dependence is quantifiable. For a midrange deck — a commander at four or five mana over an average mana value near three — the conventional 10 to 12 pieces is well calibrated: it delivers a ramp piece by turn 4 in roughly 67 to 74% of games. A cheap commander over a low curve wants 8 to 10 pieces weighted toward one-mana dorks, and a deck built around a six-plus-mana commander wants 12 to 15 with as many two-mana pieces as it can find.

How much ramp does a 7-drop commander need?

12 to 15 pieces, weighted as cheap as possible. One rock only moves a turn-7 commander to turn 6; coming down two turns early takes two pieces by turn 5, which happens in about 31% of games at ten pieces and 48% at fourteen. The fallback is grim: at 37 lands even the sixth land drop arrives on time in only about a quarter of games, so a big commander that skimps on ramp simply does not get cast at a relevant point in the game.

Do rituals and treasures count as ramp?

Not toward the counts on this page. A ritual or a one-shot treasure is a loan — one burst of mana that is gone when the turn ends — while every number here is about permanent mana that compounds on each turn after it lands. Decks built to convert a single explosive turn, like storm or combo, value bursts highly, but that is a different budget with different math.

How many mana rocks is too many?

Past about fifteen mana producers in a normal deck the returns fall on both ends: each extra piece adds fewer percentage points of acceleration — going from 8 to 10 pieces buys about 9 points of turn-4 reliability, while going from 14 to 16 buys about 5 — and every slot comes out of the spells the mana was supposed to cast. A hand of three ramp pieces and no payoff loses the same way a flooded hand does.

Should a deck with a cheap commander still run ramp?

Yes, but less of it and a different kind. A two-mana rock cannot be cast before turn 2, so it can never put a two- or three-mana commander onto the battlefield early — for those decks rocks are mid-game value, not acceleration. Eight to ten pieces weighted toward one-mana dorks keeps the mid-game mana competitive without spending slots on a speed bonus the curve cannot cash.
